How Did We Start?

The video documentary series of Global Veteran Stories was created in November of 2021 by a then, 22 Year Old Zach Dunn.

Inspired by the story of his own grandad, John Williams (1921-2003), who joined the British Airforce at the age of 18 as a Paratrooper, serving in Africa and Germany from 1939-1945.

Zach made it his goal to make sure the stories of World War 2 (WWII), Korean War and Vietnam War Veterans are documented to help preserve the legacies and names of these Veterans forever.

Who is Zach Dunn?

Zach Dunn is a Canadian historian, filmmaker, and founder of Global Veteran Stories, an oral history project dedicated to preserving the firsthand accounts of military veterans before their stories are lost to time.

Since 2021, Zach has traveled across Canada, the United States, and internationally to interview more than 165 veterans from 18 Allied countries, including veterans of the Second World War, Korean War, Vietnam War, and peacekeeping missions. His work focuses on recording long-form video interviews, digitizing personal photographs and documents, and making these stories freely available to the public, schools, museums, researchers, and future generations.

What began as an effort to learn more about his own grandfather's military service evolved into a large-scale historical preservation project. Through Global Veteran Stories, Zach has interviewed veterans ranging from D-Day soldiers and Bomber Command aircrew to Merchant Navy sailors, resistance members, war brides, and civilian witnesses of wartime events.

His work has been featured by numerous media outlets including:

  • CBC Radio

  • CHCH News

  • Niagara This Week

  • Wellington Advertiser

  • GuelphToday

  • CambridgeToday

  • Bay Observer

  • 9 News Australia

  • Other Canadian and international news organizations

Beyond recording interviews, Zach regularly travels to veterans' homes, long-term care facilities, Legion branches, and historical events to ensure these stories are preserved in the veterans' own words.
